Lucy Coleman is an award-winning Australian writer, director, producer, and practice-led researcher - hailed as “the face of Australian Cinema going forward” (Andrew Pierce - The Curb) - whose body of work is built on complex portrayals of contemporary Australian womanhood.
Her debut feature Hot Mess (2020) – self-funded on a micro-budget ($3000) – became a festival hit and secured global distribution on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Binge, and SBS On Demand, and earned nominations from both the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) and the Australian Directors Guild (ADG).
Her micro-budget web series On the Fringe (2018) amassed over ten million views internationally through self-distribution on DailyMotion, while her short film Lean In (2024) was ranked among The Curb’s best Australian films of 2024 and won awards at Flickerfest, the Venice Short Film Festival, New York Film Festival, St Kilda Film Festival and more.
Coleman was part of the highly competitive Ron Howard and Brian Grazer development lab, Impact Imagine, in 2022 and the Screen Australia talent escalator Talent LA in 2019.
In 2024, Coleman created and served as sole writer on Exposure, a critically acclaimed mystery-thriller commissioned by Stan. The series was hailed by critics as “uncompromising” and “powerful arthouse TV” (ScreeHub) receiving seven AACTA nominations including Best Miniseries.
Her practice now also extends into education and practice-led research. Coleman is funneling her industry learnings into a PhD at RMIT University. Her research project investigates reparative feminist storytelling as both narrative methodology and creative practice.
Coleman’s passion extends to inspiring the next generation of Australian storytellers. She is a screen educator at RMIT, the University of Melbourne, and has been a mentor for emerging filmmakers through the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF).
